When does my car need an MOT?

The rules

Your car needs its first MOT when it's 3 years old, then every 12 months after that. Driving without a valid MOT is illegal (except to drive directly to a pre-booked test) and your insurance may also be void.

You can check your MOT expiry date on gov.uk.

Book early — keep your date

You can test up to one calendar month before your current MOT expires without losing your renewal date. For example, if your MOT expires on 15 June, you can test from 16 May and your new certificate still runs to 15 June the following year.

This means there's no reason to leave it to the last minute. Book ahead and avoid the stress.

Do you offer while-you-wait MOTs?
Yes. Most tests take around 45 minutes to an hour. We have a comfortable waiting area with tea and coffee, or you can drop the car off and we'll call you when it's ready.
