Diesel Particulate Filter

Blocked DPF? We can help.

A common problem on modern diesels

DPF issues are one of the most common problems on modern diesel vehicles. The diesel particulate filter is a critical part of your exhaust system, designed to trap harmful soot particles before they reach the atmosphere. When it becomes blocked, your vehicle can lose power, go into limp mode, or fail to start altogether.

We offer forced regeneration, professional DPF cleaning and full DPF replacement at our Doncaster workshop. Whatever the severity of the blockage, we have the equipment and experience to diagnose the problem and get you back on the road.

How a DPF works

Your DPF collects soot particles from the exhaust gases as they pass through a honeycomb ceramic filter. During normal motorway driving, the exhaust temperature rises high enough to burn off this soot automatically — this is called passive regeneration.

When passive regeneration doesn't happen often enough (typically due to short journeys), the ECU triggers active regeneration by injecting extra fuel to raise exhaust temperatures. If this process is repeatedly interrupted — for example by switching off the engine mid-cycle — soot builds up until the filter becomes blocked and the DPF warning light illuminates.

Warning Signs

Symptoms of a blocked DPF

If you notice any of these symptoms on your diesel vehicle, have the DPF checked before the problem gets worse.

DPF warning light

The DPF or exhaust filter warning light appears on your dashboard. This is the most common first sign that soot levels are building up and regeneration has not completed successfully.

Reduced power / limp mode

The engine management system restricts power output to protect the engine and DPF from further damage. You may notice a significant loss of acceleration and a speed limit of around 40 mph.

Increased fuel consumption

A blocked DPF forces the engine to work harder and triggers more frequent active regeneration attempts, both of which increase fuel usage noticeably.

Excessive exhaust smoke

Thick black or grey smoke from the exhaust, particularly during acceleration, can indicate that soot is not being properly filtered or that regeneration is failing.

Failed regeneration cycles

If the vehicle repeatedly starts an active regeneration but cannot complete it — often due to short journeys or stop-start driving — the DPF becomes progressively more blocked.

Strong diesel smell

A noticeable fuel or diesel odour from the exhaust or inside the cabin can result from incomplete combustion during failed regeneration cycles, where excess fuel is injected but not fully burned.

What We Offer

Our DPF services

Forced regeneration

Using professional diagnostic equipment, we trigger a controlled regeneration cycle to burn off accumulated soot. This is often enough to clear a partially blocked DPF and turn off the warning light. Ideal when the blockage is caught early.

Professional DPF cleaning

For more heavily blocked filters, a forced regen alone may not be sufficient. We carry out thorough DPF cleaning to remove both soot and accumulated ash, restoring the filter to near-original flow capacity.

DPF replacement

If the filter is physically damaged, cracked, or too heavily contaminated to clean effectively, we can supply and fit a replacement DPF. We source quality parts for all makes and models and provide a detailed estimate upfront.

Diagnostics & fault code clearing

Every DPF job starts with a full diagnostic scan to identify the root cause — whether it's a blocked filter, faulty sensor, EGR valve issue, or another underlying problem. We clear all related fault codes once the repair is complete.

Prevention

How to keep your DPF healthy

Most DPF problems are preventable. Follow these tips to reduce the risk of a blocked filter.

Regular motorway drives

Drive at motorway or dual carriageway speeds for at least 30 minutes on a regular basis. This allows the exhaust temperature to rise high enough for passive regeneration to occur naturally.

Use the correct engine oil

Always use low-ash engine oil that meets the C2 or C3 specification recommended by your manufacturer. Standard oils produce more ash, which builds up in the DPF and cannot be burned off.

Don't ignore the warning light

If the DPF light comes on, take action promptly. An early-stage blockage can often be cleared with a motorway drive or a forced regeneration. Leaving it will make the problem significantly worse and more expensive to fix.

Keep up with servicing

Regular servicing ensures your engine runs cleanly and efficiently, reducing the amount of soot produced. Worn injectors, faulty glow plugs and EGR issues all contribute to excess soot.

Avoid lots of short trips

Frequent short journeys — especially in town — mean the exhaust never gets hot enough for regeneration. If your daily driving is mostly urban, make a conscious effort to include regular longer runs.

FAQ

DPF cleaning — your questions answered

What does a DPF do?
A diesel particulate filter captures soot and ash particles from your exhaust gases to reduce harmful emissions. The trapped soot is periodically burned off through a process called regeneration, which happens automatically during normal driving — particularly at higher speeds on motorways and dual carriageways.
Can I just remove the DPF?
No. Removing, gutting or bypassing a DPF is illegal in the UK under the Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986. Your vehicle will also fail its MOT if the DPF has been tampered with or removed. We will never carry out DPF deletion work — it's not worth the legal risk or the environmental harm.
How much does DPF cleaning cost?
A forced regeneration typically costs between £100 and £200. Professional DPF cleaning ranges from £200 to £400 depending on the vehicle and severity of the blockage. A full DPF replacement can cost £1,000 or more. We provide a detailed estimate before any work begins. If additional issues are found, we always inform you and get your approval before proceeding.
How do I prevent DPF problems?
The best prevention is regular motorway driving for 30 minutes or more to allow passive regeneration. Use the correct low-ash engine oil (C2 or C3 specification), keep up with scheduled servicing, don't ignore the DPF warning light, and try to avoid a driving pattern that is exclusively short urban trips.
Will a forced regeneration fix it?
In many cases, yes — especially if the blockage is caught early. A forced regeneration uses diagnostic equipment to raise the exhaust temperature and burn off accumulated soot. However, if the DPF is heavily blocked with compacted ash or is physically damaged, professional cleaning or a full replacement may be necessary. We'll diagnose the situation and recommend the most cost-effective solution.
